2020 herald a new world order where avoidance of crowded public spaces is the new normal and in all likelihood, the new normal is here to stay! The age old adage of removing cars from the road while promoting mass transit systems as a means to reduce greenhouse gasses and traffic congestion has suddenly become a liability. Introducing mass transit systems comes at a huge cost to governments, and if ridership is low, they soon become a costly liability. Where do we go from here?

Modern mass transport systems will need to adapt to this new normal in providing passengers loading options that respect social distancing norms, while providing options to expand revenue streams. A re-evaluation of safety norms is now imperative and in all likelihood would require new solutions, opening up the market to new entities.

Fraunhofer IFAM is the internationally leading independent research institute in the field of "adhesive bonding". Adhesive bonding enables the reliable bonding of identical as well as dissimilar materials with an adhesive and is thus essential for the advancing multi-material lightweight construction. Unlike welding or riveting, adhesive bonds do not weaken the mechanical properties of the parts to be joined. In addition to mechanics, bonded joints integrate specific requirements: They can conduct heat, electrically insulate, seal or bridge tolerances. Professionally designed adhesive bonding processes integrate into series production without interference. Adhesive bonds can be assured of high quality through process design. For these reasons, adhesive bonding has become established across all industries in recent decade.

In view of the economy reset, the need to introduce innovative solutions, as todays requirement is set squarly against industry norms. In the rail industry, globalization meant higher demand for transportation solutions. Urbanization in the new norm translate into more private cars on the road as people steers clear of crowded spaces. Increased transportation and travel restrictions make international trade couter productive.
The current climate begs the introduction of new public transport solutions that is home grown, and does not burden the already depleted public purse.
This is the time to look inwards, not outwards. Localization strengthens internal capabilities, lower cost, improve the national economy. It shapes a country to be better prepared for the global markets once the world adapted to the new norm.
